Description
A comforting family favorite that marries rich ground beef with tender orzo and a luscious tomato cream sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 cup orzo pasta
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (or crushed tomatoes)
- 1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half for lighter fare)
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 teaspoon dried garlic)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Sauté chopped onions until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- Pour in the diced tomatoes (with juices) and stir, allowing flavors to combine for 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the orzo, blending with the beef and tomato mixture.
- Pour in the heavy cream. Lower heat to medium-low and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until orzo is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid.
- Taste and adjust salt and pepper as necessary.
- Finish with fresh herbs, serve warm, and enjoy!
Notes
For added heat, include a pinch of red pepper flakes. If the sauce thickens too much, add a splash of water or broth to loosen it up.
