- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan and allow it to cool slightly.
- Stir in granulated and brown sugars until well combined.
- Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by vanilla extract.
- Mix in red food coloring and cocoa powder until fully blended.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt, then gradually fold into the wet mixture.
- Add buttermilk and mix until just incorporated.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly; optionally sprinkle pecans or chocolate chips on top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out mostly clean. Let cool before cutting into squares.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for better blending. Watch baking time closely to avoid overbaking.
