Description
A hearty and flavorful slow-cooked chicken shawarma that brings joy to gatherings and family dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- Chicken thighs (or breasts for a lower-fat option)
- 2 tsp cumin
- 2 tsp coriander
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp cayenne
- 1 tsp allspice
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 cup Greek yogurt (or dairy-free yogurt)
- 2 tbsp olive oil (or avocado oil)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cut the chicken thighs into uniform pieces for even cooking.
- In a bowl, mix together the garlic, spices, olive oil, and yogurt. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Place the chicken in the marinade, cover it, and let it sit for at least one hour (or overnight in the fridge for more flavor).
- Sauté the marinated chicken in a skillet for about 5 minutes (optional).
- Transfer everything into your slow cooker, setting it on low for 6-7 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
- Check for doneness; the chicken should be tender and easily shredded with a fork.
- Serve the chicken warm in pita bread with fresh veggies or over rice.
Notes
Adjust the spices based on your family’s preference. For a crispy texture, broil the cooked chicken for a few minutes before serving.
